Inspector Alastair Ransom first appeared in City for Ransom, and the editors at HarperCollins liked him so much that they wanted two additional novels featuring Ransom, thus Shadows in the White City and City of the Absent followed. These three Chicago City books have a timeline straddling the spring, summer, and fall season of 1893 during the greatest of all the World’s Fairs. Alastair Ransom, facing a rope at the end of the trilogy, escapes to Europe and finally to Belfast, Ireland where he comes into contact with a ship about to launch in 1912 called Titanic. Yes, it is quite a few years since 1893, nineteen to be exact, but my Titanic 2012 – Curse of RMS Titanic begged for the return of Alastair Ransom. Now this short story deals with an incident in Ransom’s life before he fell prey to his enemies, and was charged with murder in the death of a priest in back Chicago.
